Running with a Gun: Concealment Techniques Ranked Worst to Best
Recently, as I've been preparing for the Tactical Games in September of 2024, I've been thinking more about running safety and the best ways to carry a gun while running. In this article, I'll share my experience and insights on finding the most comfortable and safe manner of concealment while running. For the full YouTube video version of this article, click here.
Running is a great way to stay in shape, but for those of us who carry a firearm, it introduces a unique set of challenges.
Essential Safety Gear
Before diving into the various concealment methods, it's essential to mention some safety gear that complements carrying a firearm:
POM Pepper Spray: For non-lethal self-defense from humans and as a deterrent for dogs.
First-Aid Kit (including a tourniquet): To handle medical emergencies.
Brightly Colored Clothing and LED Vest: To increase visibility and distract from the midsection where the firearm is concealed.
GPS Tracker and Informing Others of Your Location: To offer a means of location and communication with your loved ones.

Evaluating Concealment Methods
I've tested several concealment methods by running at least a mile with each setup. Below, I review a few modes of concealment so you can determine the best option for yourself. In order of my most favorite methods of concealment to my least favorite:
Concealment Pocket Leggings with Holster (Least Favorite)
Issues: During a one-mile run, I found that I had to frequently stop to adjust the holster in the internal pocket. I had a Kydex holster with two Discrete Carry Concepts Clips placed in the internal pocket. While the concealment method was comfortable, it did not pass my test.
Bifold Leather Trigger Guard: The leather bifold trigger guard used in these leggings offers minimal retention and is not suitable for intense activity like running.
2. Concealment Belt with High-Quality Kydex Holster
Convenience: Most people own a concealment belt and holster, therefore this may be an easily-accessible option for running. Use a good concealment belt like the Hunter Constantine Concealment Belt paired with a high-quality Kydex holster.
Shorts/Pants with Belt Loops: Wear this setup with leggings or shorts with belt loops for proper retention. One of my favorite options are the leggings and shorts by Vakandi. Note that these leggings are not fully opaque. As a result, I like to pair these with a pair of Spanx base-layer shorts.
3. Modular Belly Band with Kydex Holster + DCC Clips
Holster Options:
Hybrid Holsters: Not very reliable for retention because the leather allows the gun to shift. Over time, the leather deflects and breaks down, requiring constant adjustments. These adjustments are made by the user and as a result, are subject to user error. While the Modular belly band by Crossbreed Holsters is sold with the Modular Hybrid, Velcro holster, I do recommend a full-Kydex holster with reliable clips.
High-Quality Kydex Holsters + Discrete Carry Concept Clips: Pairing a Kydex holster with high-quality clips (like those from Discrete Carry Concept) is a better option. This setup is more reliable for running. The holster should be clipped to the back side of the belly band unless the holster also has a layer of velcro for attachment to the first belly band layer. For more context, see the associated YouTube video.
Comfort and Adjustability: The belly band fabric is extremely comfortable for long-term wear and stays in place. You can adjust it to your desired height for better accessibility.
Disclaimer: Like all gear, you must observe the quality of the velcro. Over time, the velcro may lose its structural integrity which may pose a safety risk.
Versatility: One of my favorite modes of carry, suitable for all-day wear and activities like running.
Retention and Comfort: Provides excellent retention both vertically and laterally, and is comfortable around the hips and slightly higher if prefered.
Additional Retention: Some people add a Discrete Carry Concepts Clip (DCC) to provide additional retention to the holster configuration
Final Thoughts
Running with a gun is challenging, but finding the right concealment method can make it manageable. Always test your gear before going on an actual run by unloading your firearm (check it twice) or using a blue gun. Perform activities like burpees, squat jumps, and short sprints to ensure your setup maintains retention and comfort.
I hope these techniques help you on your journey.
